Evaluation Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity

editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the

progression from it to full product?

Preliminary Task

Main Task

The preliminary task helped me and Lucy prepare for the main task because we had to parctice camera shots that we my need in the main task and also get familiar with the technology we had to use for example, the editing software and the camera. The three main things we had to focus on was the 180 degree rule, match on action and shot/reverse shot. Throughout the filming of the preliminary task we also noticed things that weren't very succesful so we could then make sure we don't make those mistakes again in the main final task. We noticed that sometimes we hadnt filmed enough takes of each shot to avoid a mistake in one take so then we had to work around that. Also some of the shots weren't very smooth which made it look unprofessional.

180 degree rule:

The 180 degree rule is there to make filming look profressional. When filming you should imagine a line that is drawn perpendicular to the camera's viewpoint in the establishing shot of the scene. The camera/s should all remain on the same side of this line. Which is the 180 degree angle that you can place the camera if you go over the other side of the 180 degree angle you are breaking the rule and it won't look professional.

An example of the 180 degree rule:

Match on Action:
Match on action is an editing technique which is used to make sure continutity editing is achieved. One shot cuts to another shot which portarys the action of the subject in the first shot.

An example of match on action:

Shot/Reverse Shot:
Shot reverse shot is an editing technique where the first shot is where one character is shown looking at another character and then the next shot is of the other character is looking back at the first character.

An example of Shot/Reverse Shot:

In our main task we had no shot reverse shot because there were no conversations between two people.

These are some screen grabs from the preliminary task and the main final task to show comparison and how we have progressed:

Main Task

The progression from the preliminary task to the main task has made me realise how the skills i learnt from the preliminary task enabled me to create a higher quality final task.
I think that in the final task the whole thing is alot better than the preliminary task because we have included sound, transisitons and effects but in the preliminary task it was very basic and didn't look very high quality. We learnt from the preliminary task to make sure we dilm each scene more than once to avoid any mistakes which is what we did which allowed us to then create a film without having to cut bits out to avoid mistakes.

A difference that the main task had from the preliminary task is, we had to create a film company logo as this made it look like a real film and we also had to add titles to the opening sequence to so those are two more skills i have learnt to be able to create a final piece that was better than the preliminary task.

Final Piece: Vicini

Evaluation: Question 6

What have you learnt about technologies

from the process of constructing this

product?

Internet Explorer

I have used Internet explorer a lot throughout constructing this product. I have used it to access blogger, the website for my blog. The good things about the Internet is that it provides a very safe reasonable search engine. I didn't learn many skills using Internet Explorer as i use Inernet Explorer alot in my own time so i already knew a lot about it.

Blogger

I used blogger to create my blog for my AS media portfolio. I accessed this through Internet explorer. I found that the positive things about blogger were it was very easy to navigate around the website and the blogs are very customisable which makes it easy to personalise. The negative things may be that sometimes it can be slow which is time consuming. The skills i learnt through using Blogger is that i can access my blog through other devices (my mobile) and edit my blog easily using these devices. I have also learnt how to customise my blog to make it personal and suit my blog theme.

Adobe Premier Elements 8.0
I used adobe premier elements 8.0 to create my preliminary task and final task. I thought the positive things about this programme is that it enable you to edit footage very easily without being too complicated and the negatives are that it can be very low to load which takes up a lot of valuable time. The skills i have learnt through using this programme is how to edit video footage and add sound and effects to make it look very professional.

Computer
I used a computer the most to create this product. I accessed, adobe premiere elements 8.0, blogger, Internet explorer, prezi and Microsoft word. The positives about the computer i used is that it has up to date software and it works very well. There isn't really any disadvantages about the computer apart from at times it can be quite slow. I haven't learnt many skills while using the computer as i have used a computer alot throughout my daily life so i have already gained skills for using a computer.

Prezi

I used prezi to create some presentations for my blog posts.  Prezi is a website for making presentations on. I found this very useful as it helped my incorporate different types of work into my blog.
The presentations i made on prezi are also interactive on my blog, so that they can be looked at while looking through my blog. The skills i have learnt while using this website is how to embed a Prezi into my blog and i have also learnt how to personalise the presentations by changing colour and font.

Microsoft Word
I used Microsoft word when creating a blog post analysing opening titles to The Conjuring, film. I think the positive things about word are that it is an up to date programme and is very simple to use. The negatives are that you can't import word files into your blog. I haven't gained many skills using this programme because i have already used Word to do a lot of school work so i have already gained the skills for the programme.

Laptop

I used a laptop at home to carry on updating my blog away from school. I think the positives about this is that i can catch up on blog work and keep up to date when im not in school. the negatives about this are that i can sometimes do work at home and forget to send it in to school so i can add it to my blog.I haven;t learnt many skills using the laptop either because i have already learnt skills from using a laptop from a young age.

You Tube

I used YouTube to upload my preliminary task and main task to and embed those videos into my blog. I also did some horror research on YouTube to find the evaluation of horror. I also watched opening sequence of films on here to plan for my final task opening sequence.  The positives about You Tube are that i can easily find any videos that i want and i can also embed the videos into my blog so that they are interactive and can be watched while looking through my blog.  The skills i have learnt through using this website is that i can embed a you tube video into my blog.

Camera

I used a handheld video camera to video my final task and preliminary task.
The positives about the camera is that it has good memory capacity so that i could record alot of videos and footage incase i went wrong and had to film multiple scenes. The negatives are that the camera doesnt have very good battery life so charging it can take up valuable time if i don't notice that the battery life is low before i use it. The skills i learnt using the camera is that i can now film successfully and change the angle of the camera using a tripod and also learnt that using the camera as a handheld camera doesn't allow you to get smooth video footage so i learnt that i need to use a tripod to keep it stable.

Art of The Title

I used this website to research different opening sequence so that i could plan for my final opening sequence. The positive things about this website is that it is easy to navigate around the page and you can access many different title sequences from different genres of film. The negatives about this website is that it can be slow and sometimes the title videos don't load very fast. The skills i learnt through using Art of the Title are that i have learnt lots of different things to do with opening titles which helped me create mine and i used this website to analyse opening titles to put on my blog.

Microsoft Powerpoint

I have used Microsoft Powerpoint to make presentations for my blog. The positives about this programme is that it is up to date and the programme works very well. The negatives about this programme are that I can't embed the presentations into my blog to that they are interactive I just have to add each slide as a picture onto my blog posts. The skills i learnt with this programme is that i can create lots of different designed presentations about any topic.

Evaluation Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

I have annotated this video, the annotations highlight how my film links to other horror films and how. Also the annotations refer to the conventions of the genre and about the use of music and sound.

Evaluation Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The target audience for my media prduct is anyone aged 15 and over. We chose this classification because there is aspects of violence and links to death, we was going to keep it at a 12 A but then we thought that was too low because of the strong links to death.

I asked the people who i got feedback from if they would be recorded so i could put it on my blog but they didnt want to but they wrote down some feedback for me to use instead.

Courtney Wakehanm's feedback of Vicini :

My first impressions of Vicini was that i wasnt too sure if it was a horror film, i had an idea it was going to be a horror because of the effects added to the production name that was quite distorted. The acting was very good and they both stayed in character throughout the whole opening sequence. The fade to black transitions were really effective and gave it a mysterious feel.

Preeya Ganger's feedback of Vicini:

I thought that this film opening was really good and the use of fade to black transitions were really effective because they linked in with the genre giving it a dark mysterious feel. The sound was really effective and flowed really well with the filming footage, also the music was really well linked to the horror.

Abbie Sewell's feedback of Vicini:
The music that was used was really strong and suited the genre really well and the sound was only used when Miss Vicini went outside and i thought this was really good because when she was inside there was background noise so there was no need for sound to be added. The filming was really good and the only thing i would say that wasnt very good was the camera work was sometimes not very smooth but the majority of the time it was so that is a positive.

Naomi Cunnington's feedback of Vicini:

I think that the titles they used were really well done and looked very effective and the acting was very proffesional they all stayed in character really well. I liked the transitions as it gave it a mysterious feel which links to horror. I knew that this was a horror film opening because of the music and props used as they were clear conventions of horror.

Aidan Sewell's feedback of Vicini:props
My first impressions of this film opening were really positive the use of props and sound gave it a strong horror feel and all of the editing flowed really well. The different camera shots were really good too, for example the one where Miss Vicini walked up to the door opened it and then the next shot was her walking out of the door that flowed brilliantly.

Evaluation Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I think the media institution that might distribute my media product would be Lionsgate. Lionsgate is an North American entertainment company.

I think that Lionsgate may distribute it because they are well known for distributing horror films and my film is a horror film. Lionsgate's most successful horror film is 'Saw'.
Also they are an independent media institution.

Lionsgate is a well known institution so we think that our film 'Vicini' would be represented well to the audience.
